homolog
Evolutionarily related structure
A homolog is something that corresponds to or matches something else in structure, position, or origin.
In biology, homologs are genes or chromosomes that share ancestry—one inherited from each parent, or similar sequences across different species: The human gene has a homolog in mice.
In chemistry, homologs are compounds differing by a repeating unit.
Also spelled homologue.
