hogbacks
Steep geological formations
Hogbacks are long, narrow ridges with steeply sloping sides, formed when erosion exposes a tilted layer of resistant rock.
The shape resembles a pig's arched back.
The term appears in geology and geography: The trail follows the hogback for several miles.
In archaeology, hogbacks are Viking-era stone monuments shaped like houses or animals, found mainly in northern England.
