ship burials
Nautical grave tradition
Ship burials are funeral practices in which the dead are interred in or with a ship or boat.
The vessel might be buried whole, burned, or set adrift.
Associated with Viking Age Scandinavia and Anglo-Saxon England, ship burials typically honored high-status individuals—kings, warriors, chieftains—and often included grave goods: weapons, jewelry, provisions for the afterlife.
The famous Sutton Hoo excavation in England revealed an elaborate seventh-century ship burial.
