hillfolk

Rural upland residents

Hillfolk are people who live in hilly or mountainous rural areas, especially in Appalachia or the Ozarks.

The term carries connotations of isolation, self-sufficiency, and traditional ways of life: The hillfolk kept to themselves and distrusted outsiders.

It can be neutral or mildly pejorative depending on context, sometimes implying backwardness or clannishness.
