highbush

Lofty berry plant

Highbush is an adjective describing plants, especially berry-producing shrubs, that grow relatively tall rather than low to the ground.

It appears most often in the compound highbush blueberry, the cultivated variety found in grocery stores, which grows on bushes reaching six feet or more.

The highbush blueberries were easier to pick than the wild lowbush ones.

The term distinguishes these taller cultivars from their shorter, ground-hugging relatives.
