herding instinct
Pack control urge
Herding instinct is the inborn drive in certain dog breeds to control the movement of other animals—circling, chasing, and positioning livestock without explicit training.
Border collies, Australian shepherds, and similar breeds display this behavior naturally: Her herding instinct kicked in and she started circling the children in the yard.
The term extends to any innate tendency to gather or organize groups.
