conditioned response

Trained automatic behavior

A conditioned response is a learned reaction to a stimulus that wouldn't naturally trigger it.

In psychology, the classic example is Pavlov's dogs salivating at a bell—the bell alone didn't cause salivation until paired repeatedly with food.

The term extends beyond laboratories: Her conditioned response to criticism was immediate defensiveness.
