heliotropes
Purple sun-following flowers
Heliotropes are plants with clusters of small, fragrant purple flowers, named for their tendency to turn toward the sun.
The word extends to a light purple color resembling the flowers, and to a type of green chalcedony flecked with red.
A heliotrope is also an instrument using mirrors to reflect sunlight for surveying: The crew set up heliotropes on distant peaks to establish sight lines.
