shade plants

Low-light garden dwellers

Shade plants are species that thrive in low-light conditions, typically under tree canopies or on the north side of buildings where direct sunlight is limited.

Ferns, hostas, and impatiens are common examples.

Gardeners select shade plants for areas where sun-loving species would struggle: The backyard gets almost no direct light, so we filled it with shade plants.
