hedgebank

Rural boundary mound

A hedgebank is an earthen mound or ridge topped with a hedge, common in the British countryside as a boundary marker between fields.

These structures combine the bank itself—often centuries old—with the shrubs growing along its crest: Primroses bloomed along the hedgebank in early spring.

Hedgebanks provide habitat for wildlife and are characteristic features of rural Devon and Cornwall.
