hashing out
Thrashing through details
Hashing out means working through something thoroughly, usually by discussion or argument, until it's resolved.
You hash out the details of a contract, hash out differences with a coworker, or hash out a plan before implementing it.
The phrase suggests effort and sometimes friction—problems don't get hashed out quickly or easily.
We spent three hours hashing out the budget.
