handliner
Solo line catcher
A handliner is a fisher who catches fish using a handline—a simple fishing line held in the hands rather than attached to a rod or reel.
The method is traditional and still used in small-scale commercial fishing: The handliners brought in cod and mackerel from the morning run.
The term appears most often in Atlantic Canada and similar fishing communities.
