handicams

Small video cameras

Handicams are small, portable video cameras designed to be held in the hand while recording.

The term emerged in the 1980s and 1990s as consumer camcorders became affordable and widespread.

Handicam footage has a characteristic unsteady, intimate quality that filmmakers sometimes adopt deliberately for documentaries or found-footage horror films: The movie was shot entirely on handicams to create a sense of realism.
