flashbacks

Reliving old trauma

Flashbacks are vivid, often involuntary memories of past events that intrude on the present moment.

The term originated in film, where a flashback is a scene depicting earlier events: The movie uses flashbacks to reveal the character's childhood.

In psychology, flashbacks are a symptom of trauma, particularly PTSD, where someone relives a distressing experience as if it were happening again.

The word also describes the recurrence of drug effects long after taking a hallucinogen.
