rebreathing
Inhaling exhaled air
Rebreathing is inhaling air you've already exhaled, typically in a confined space or through faulty equipment.
In medicine, it can cause dangerous carbon dioxide buildup: The infant died from rebreathing while sleeping face-down on soft bedding.
Some anesthesia systems use controlled rebreathing to conserve gases and maintain humidity.
