haftorah
Synagogue scripture selection
Haftorah, also spelled haftarah, is a selection from the Hebrew prophetic books read aloud in synagogue following the Torah reading on Sabbaths and Jewish holidays.
Each haftorah passage thematically connects to the weekly Torah portion, creating a dialogue between the Five Books of Moses and the later prophets.
The person called to read the haftorah, often a bar or bat mitzvah celebrant, typically chants it according to traditional cantillation melodies.
