haemostats
Surgical clamping tools
Haemostats are surgical instruments designed to control bleeding by clamping blood vessels.
They resemble scissors but have locking handles that hold tissue firmly without continuous pressure from the surgeon's hand.
The term also applies to any agent or device that stops bleeding—chemical compounds, pressure bandages, or clotting factors.
The surgeon applied haemostats to the severed artery.
Also spelled hemostats.
