grubstaker

Mining venture investor

A grubstaker is someone who provides money, supplies, or other resources to fund another person's venture—originally a prospector's mining expedition—in exchange for a share of any profits.

The term comes from grubstake, where "grub" meant food and provisions.

The grubstaker took a fifty percent cut of whatever gold the prospector found.
