grangers

Rural fraternity members

Grangers is the plural of granger, a somewhat old-fashioned word for a farmer.

The term gained currency through the Grange, a fraternal organization founded in 1867 to advocate for agricultural interests.

Members were called grangers, and the movement's influence on railroad regulation produced "granger laws" and "granger railroads" in American history: The grangers pushed for fairer shipping rates.
