gold disc
Sales milestone trophy
A gold disc is a certification awarded to musicians when a recording reaches a specified sales threshold, typically around 500,000 copies in the US or 100,000 in the UK.
The term comes from the practice of mounting gold-plated copies of the record as awards.
Platinum and diamond discs mark higher milestones.
