gatekeep

Restrict who enters

Gatekeep means to control access to something—resources, communities, or cultural spaces.

The term often carries negative connotations, suggesting someone is arbitrarily deciding who belongs or what counts as authentic: Stop gatekeeping—let people enjoy things.

A gatekeeper traditionally guards an entrance, but gatekeeping now frequently describes policing the boundaries of fandoms, identities, or hobbies: He was gatekeeping the music scene, dismissing anyone who discovered the band after 2010.
