gaoler
Keeper of inmates
A gaoler is a jailer—someone who runs or guards a jail.
The spelling is British, preserving the older form from which "jail" derived.
Both spellings have coexisted for centuries, with "jailer" now dominant in American English and increasingly common in British English as well.
