gamma decay

Photon from nucleus

Gamma decay is a type of radioactive decay in which an atomic nucleus releases energy by emitting a gamma ray—a high-energy photon.

Unlike alpha or beta decay, gamma decay doesn't change the number of protons or neutrons; the nucleus simply drops from an excited state to a lower energy level.

Gamma rays are highly penetrating and require dense shielding like lead or concrete.
