gamboge
Mustard-toned tree sap
Gamboge is a deep yellow or mustard-colored pigment derived from the resin of certain Southeast Asian trees.
Artists have used it in watercolors and as a coloring agent since it was first imported to Europe in the seventeenth century.
The word also names the color itself, a rich golden yellow with slightly orange undertones.
The painter mixed gamboge with blue to create a vibrant green.
