fugue state
Dissociative wandering episode
A fugue state is a period of amnesia during which a person may travel, assume a new identity, or act purposefully while having no memory of their former life.
It's a dissociative condition, often triggered by trauma or extreme stress.
The person appears normal to others but later has no recollection of their actions: He wandered for three days in a fugue state before waking up in another city.
The term borrows from the musical fugue, suggesting themes that repeat and interweave without clear resolution.
