frostbitten

Harmed by cold

Frostbitten describes tissue that has been damaged by extreme cold.

When skin and underlying flesh are exposed to freezing temperatures for too long, ice crystals form in the cells, causing injury that ranges from superficial numbness to deep tissue destruction requiring amputation.

Fingers, toes, ears, and noses are most vulnerable.

The word also appears figuratively to describe anything harmed or withered by cold conditions.
