Freestyles are improvised performances, especially in rap or hip-hop, where lyrics are composed spontaneously rather than written beforehand: He dropped some freestyles in the parking lot after the show.

The term extends to any unscripted, improvisational display of skill—in dance, skiing, or swimming.

As a verb, to freestyle is to improvise: She freestyled the whole verse.
