Freestyle swimming is a competitive swimming event in which swimmers may use any stroke, though nearly all choose the front crawl because it's fastest.
The term distinguishes these races from events requiring specific strokes like backstroke or butterfly: She won gold in the 100-meter freestyle.
Outside competition, freestyle often just means the front crawl itself.
