freefalling

Plunging without resistance

Freefalling is falling through air without resistance or support—the state of a skydiver before the parachute opens, or an object dropped from height.

The word extends to any uncontrolled plunge: The stock market is freefalling, Her grades went into freefall.

The sense is of rapid, unchecked descent with nothing to slow the drop.
