frame drop

Visuals briefly freeze

A frame drop is a moment when video or animation fails to render smoothly, skipping one or more frames that should have appeared.

In gaming, frame drops cause stuttering or jerky motion, often when the hardware can't keep up with demanding scenes: I get frame drops whenever there's an explosion.

The term applies to both the individual skipped frame and the phenomenon generally.
