four-seam

Maximum velocity throw

A four-seam is a type of fastball grip in baseball where the pitcher places fingers across all four seams of the ball, producing a straight trajectory with maximum velocity: He threw a four-seam right down the middle.

The grip minimizes movement, contrasting with two-seam fastballs that tail or sink.

Often used attributively: four-seam fastball, four-seam grip.
