force-out
Baseball putout play
A force-out is a baseball play in which a runner is put out by a fielder touching the base the runner must advance to while holding the ball, rather than tagging the runner directly.
This occurs when a batter becomes a runner and forces preceding runners to advance: The shortstop stepped on second for the force-out.
Also called a force play.
