fly out
Ball caught, out
In baseball, to fly out is to be retired by hitting a ball that is caught by a fielder before it touches the ground.
The batter is said to fly out to whichever position makes the catch: He flied out to center field.
A fly out is an instance of this.
Note the irregular past tense flied rather than flew, which is standard in baseball contexts.
