force-fields

Invisible protective barriers

Force-fields are invisible barriers of energy in science fiction, typically projected to shield spacecraft, buildings, or people from attack: The ship's force-fields held against the blast.

The concept has become shorthand for any protective barrier, literal or figurative: She put up an emotional force-field.

Also spelled as one word or two: force field, forcefield.
