food coma

After-feast drowsiness

Food coma is the drowsy, sluggish state that follows a large meal.

The body diverts energy to digestion, leaving you barely functional: I ate so much at Thanksgiving I went into a food coma on the couch.

The term is informal and slightly humorous, comparing post-meal lethargy to unconsciousness.
