fontanel
Infant cranial opening
A fontanel is one of the soft, membrane-covered gaps between the bones of an infant's skull.
These spaces allow the skull to compress slightly during birth and accommodate rapid brain growth in early life.
The anterior fontanel, at the top of the head, is the largest and most noticeable—parents often call it the "soft spot." Fontanels gradually close as the skull bones fuse, typically within the first two years of life.
