floor trader

Exchange booth operator

A floor trader is a member of a stock or commodities exchange who executes trades on the trading floor, buying and selling for their own account rather than for clients.

Floor traders work in the physical pit or trading area, using hand signals and open outcry to conduct business.

As electronic trading has expanded, floor traders have become increasingly rare: The few remaining floor traders work the options pit.
