flatscreens

Modern television panels

Flatscreens are display devices—televisions or computer monitors—with thin, flat panels rather than the bulky cathode-ray tubes they replaced.

The term emerged in the late 1990s as LCD and plasma technology became affordable: We finally upgraded to flatscreens throughout the house.

Now that nearly all screens are flat, the word increasingly sounds dated.
