five-and-dime

Budget variety store

A five-and-dime is a variety store selling inexpensive household goods, originally priced at five or ten cents.

These stores—Woolworth's being the most famous—were fixtures of American Main Streets through most of the twentieth century before giving way to discount chains.

Also called a five-and-ten or dime store.
