fish stories

Tales of catches

Fish stories are exaggerated tales, especially boastful accounts of personal exploits.

The term comes from the stereotype of anglers inflating the size of their catches: By the time he finished telling it, that fish story had grown to include a shark.

Any implausible or embellished narrative may be called a fish story: His excuse for being late was another fish story.
