fireboxes

Locomotive heating compartments

Fireboxes is the plural of firebox, the chamber in a furnace, stove, or steam locomotive where fuel is burned.

In older steam engines, the firebox was where coal or wood combusted to heat water into steam.

The term also applies to the combustion chamber in wood-burning stoves and boilers: The fireboxes needed cleaning after a winter of heavy use.
