fingersmith

Skilled pocket thief

A fingersmith is a pickpocket or thief—someone skilled with their fingers at lifting valuables from pockets or purses.

The term is British slang, now old-fashioned, evoking Victorian-era street crime: The fingersmith relieved him of his watch before he'd gone ten paces.

The word gained modern recognition through Sarah Waters's 2002 novel of that title.
