finger lake

Long narrow lake

A finger lake is a long, narrow lake typically formed by glacial erosion, resembling the shape of a finger when viewed from above.

These lakes occupy deep valleys carved by advancing glaciers and often appear in parallel groups.

The term is most associated with the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, where eleven such lakes stretch across the landscape.

The cottage overlooks one of the smaller finger lakes.
