finger-counting
Manual arithmetic method
Finger-counting is using fingers to track numbers while adding, multiplying, or keeping a tally.
Children learn arithmetic this way, and adults do it when calculating informally: She did some finger-counting and said we'd need twelve chairs.
The practice extends to any rough mental calculation: After some quick finger-counting, I figured we could afford the trip.
