female hysteria
Outdated womb diagnosis
Female hysteria was a medical diagnosis applied to women from ancient times through the early 20th century, attributed to disturbances of the uterus and used to explain a wide range of symptoms including anxiety, irritability, sexual desire, and fainting.
The diagnosis reflected patriarchal assumptions that women were inherently unstable and prone to emotional excess.
Treatments ranged from rest cures to pelvic massage to institutionalization.
The term is now recognized as pseudoscience that pathologized normal female behavior and sexuality.
