facsimile machine

Phone line copier

A facsimile machine, usually shortened to fax machine, transmits documents over telephone lines.

The sending machine scans a page and converts it to audio signals; the receiving machine decodes them and prints a copy.

Once essential for business communication, fax machines have been largely displaced by email and digital documents, though they persist in medicine, law, and government where signed documents still travel this way.
