boot drive

Where OS lives

A boot drive is the storage device containing the operating system that a computer loads when starting up.

Most computers boot from an internal hard drive or solid-state drive, but can be configured to boot from external drives, USB sticks, or optical discs: I created a bootable USB as my emergency boot drive.

When troubleshooting, technicians often boot from a separate drive to access a malfunctioning system.
