exaggerating

Making mountains, molehills

Exaggerating is making something seem bigger, better, worse, or more important than it really is.

People exaggerate for emphasis, humor, or to make a story more compelling: I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the worst meal of my life.

The word often carries a hint of accusation—if you say someone is exaggerating, you're suggesting they're stretching the truth or being dramatic.
