euthanizing

Putting to sleep

Euthanizing is the act of putting an animal or person to death, typically to end suffering from illness or injury.

The term is most common in veterinary contexts: We made the difficult decision to euthanize our dog.

Applied to humans, euthanizing usually refers to physician-assisted death where legal, or carries darker connotations of killing disguised as mercy.
