quietus

Permanent rest achieved

Quietus is a formal or literary word for death, or something that brings an end to activity or existence.

Shakespeare's "when he himself might his quietus make with a bare bodkin" gave the word lasting literary currency.

More broadly, a quietus is anything that settles a matter conclusively: The court ruling put a quietus on further appeals.

The word retains a flavor of finality and formality.
